I've seen a number of posts where people have had challenges on their M1 Mac when reinstalling the OS from scratch or reformatting and reinstalling the OS or erasing their M1 Mac to return it. As of Big Sur 11.0.1 - doing this the traditional way, using the Recovery Tools causes issues (Using Disk Utility to erase or reformat the hard drive.

I have an iMac 17'(the one that looks like E.T.) running OSX.3.9 and a Powerbook G4 running the same. I am having major probs with both and backed up all files to removable HDs. I want to erase both machines completely so I can sell them. There must be something I don't know b/c on both computers when I open Disk Utility and select the 'Erase' tab - the 'Erase' button (and all others after selecting the drive) is grayed out. I cannot select anything under this tab. Help appreciated. Thx, Lynn
