- I'm not sure if step 1 was necessary, but since I did this en route to fixing the loop of death, I'll list it here for you to consider. Try to reinstall Mojave (this won't wipe your disk) - I wanted to return my macbook to as original a condition as possible, and I figured attempting to install Mojave was the best way to do it.
It is definitely a risk, but overall I think the upsides of a wider array of (admittedly less tailored) Mac OS apps is worth the risk. One of the biggest benefits is that it allows Apple itself to have a single team looking after both iPad and Mac apps, which hopefully means those apps will be updated more frequently and not left to get dusty as has so often been the case in the past.

Your Mac asks for a PIN code when it has been remotely locked using Find My. Enter the four-digit or six-digit passcode to continue.
Login window
At the login window, enter your user account password to log in to your Mac. If FileVault is turned on, this also unlocks your disk. You might see a default desktop picture in the background, which might change to your chosen desktop picture when you select your account.
